Unlike the late Tim Russert I think David Gregory as the new host and moderator of Meet the Press lacks the strength and ability to correct his guest when they make false and misleading statements like the one made by Michelle Bachman this morning.

David Gregory routinely allows his guest to talk over and even through his questions and use their talking points instead of answering his questions.

In my personal. opinion he is the wrong person to have taken over Meet the Press after the death of Tim Russert who was very tough as well as fair.

It is sad to say but even Chris Wallace on FOX is tougher on his guest than David Gregory.

It is the job of the press to get at the truth to follow the story and the facts wherever they lead not to act like a helpless cub reporter who is grateful and indebted to the guest for the interview.

I was very disappointed in David Gregory this morning he allowed a political lightweight not only to refuse to answer his question but to make a host of false and misleading statements on the air using him and his show to do it.

In his defense though when you have "people" like Bachmann and Norquist on you have to play the high wire act of letting them back themselves into a corner. If you do it yourself they could feel attacked (even though they brought it on themselves) and shut down or just up and leave. Plus if anybody was watching the Bachmann interview and missed her tap dancing around every question chances are she has already pulled the wool over their eyes and they are a lost cause.

My husband came running into the living room because he thought I was screaming at someone at the door. If he had not come in when he did - my foot would have been smashing David Gregory in the face - Again, my husband came to my TV's rescue.

I was so freaking pissed off at David Gregory, it made me sick. But, then again - I must be a masochist - I keep watching and hoping David would find a spine and challenge the Teapublicans. He almost did correct the idiot, but then apologized for stepping on the "idiots" thoughts. My jaw hit the carpet when he tried to correct her, but then my mouth snapped closed when he apologized.

I really wish Rachel Maddow would take over MTP - at least we would get a good debate with facts.

I was yelling at the tv too! I do like Gregory, but he allows outright lies to go unchallenged all the time. Bachmann just had him by the balls. Iif David Gregory can grow a pair he might become a better host/moderator. I think he has it in him.

Hey folks -don't look now - but nobody on cable news or broadcast news wants to get fired by their right wing ownership ... it's called the trickle down "pink slip" for those of you who don't understand media politics.

The media is sponsored owned and managed by the corpocracy - enough said.

I don't necessarily blame those like Gregory who have families to care for .... although I'm sure he gets lot's of surplus for keeping his mouth shut and towing the line!

Only if your a democrat if republican he probably would fear the wrath of Ailes.

The day of a well informed and quick thinking TV host is long gone. IMO it is the invention of technology of having some (probably) young uninformed reporter whispering in their ear too little too late for a response which just shows the tv host's preparation is not up to par unlike days of old.

Saw something on the news the other night about millionaires on food stamps, so Newt needs to shut his pie-hole.

I couldn't agree more with the sentiments expressed here. David Gregory might do okay as a political analyst, but he has no business conducting interviews because he's incompetent at it. For whatever reason, he almost never follows up on an evaded question. I don't know if he's not listening to the non-answers or if he just doesn't mind getting pushed around all the time by interview subjects that just want to put out their talking points regardless of the substance of the question. If you want to see a softball interview, watch Meet the Press.

It's a sorry legacy for a show with such long history of hardhitting political reporting.

Of course, to be fair, it would be difficult for anyone to attain the level of professionalism of Tim Russert. His capable handling of interviewees, his fair but deep-digging, persistent style was the hallmark of the program. It would be difficult, if not impossible for NBC to find someone of equal caliber. However, one would think that NBC could at least try to get someone that would make the interviews interesting and meaningful, and David Gregory apparantly is just not capable of that. Even the round table portion of the program isn't very good with David Gregory moderating the discussion.

Face the Nation just announced that next year the program will be extended from a half hour to an hour. That's good, because Bob Schieffer is a good interviewer. It's just not worth watching Meet the Press anymore.

I watched MtP regularly for years, and, as a political junkie, I always loved the way Russert could thoroughly haul a disingenuous politician over the coals without ever being mean or condescending. I always had the feeling that they'd go out for a beer afterwards.

I was initially surprised that NBC didn't replace Russert with Chuck Todd, but, after a few years of seeing Todd in the in the role of chief White House correspondent, in which I think he does a more than adequate job of analysis, I think he's just too snarky and cynical to be an effective moderator.

I also agree the Gregory is a good analyst, but a mediocre moderator. Maybe they should consider someone like Andrea Mitchell.

David Gregory is a light weight when compared to the late Tim Russert, Walter Cronkite and even Andy Rooney... The majority of times his guest are allowed to get away without answering the question and plugging in their political talking points without being challenged by him as the moderator or host..I think Luke Russert would have been a better choice to host the show, at least he would have kept up the tradition of Meet The Press being a program that is geared toward truth in journalism...

Or it's like what Jeff in Houston said in #16, he doesn't have the spine to be a real journalist.... He's a push over and republicans should not be afraid to go onto Meet the Press these days because he's too afraid to ask the hard questions.... With it's history, Meet The Press has been diminished with Gregory as it's host...

In a word, yes. I spotted his lack of a spine on Morning Joe in a discussion with the aged frat boy in residence. I don't watch the show. When I see him on Morning Joe, I go get a refill on my coffee. he WILL NOT get in to the face of a any Republican. Period. And if Joe Scarborough scares you Dave, pick up your toys and go home son.

And by the way, I think old Dave would be happier at Fox, just like a few of the folks over at CNN.

I thought Gregory was more victimized with PURE DISRESPECT toward him by republican schill corporate whores.

NOBODY and NO ONE can legitimately engage in debate or argument with liers, imbeciles, corporate whore AntiAmerican schills for big money republicans like Boehner & Bachman.

Best that could come from such guests is to observe what utter idiots they are.

Thumbs up for Gregory on this one. Not even Tim Russert perfected the position as he evolved.

I believe Gregory is still evolving in such a spot and is getting better at not being lenient or partisan to left or right and will not be "used" to deliver any kind of message for any party.

Like Tim Russert once said "When interviewing a guest, you have to take the opposing view."
I think Gregory did if not come close to that today.

When Tim Russert was alive, Meet The Press was must see TV for me. Since Gregory took it over, I hardly ever watch. He does not hold anyone accountable for what they say and will back off any debate. The show would be much better served with a Rachel Maddow or a Lawrence O'Donnell hosting. At least then, the distortions and lies would cause some fireworks.

Since this is who David Gregory has always been, it can only be assumed that he was chosen for his doormat interview style, to participate in cover-up rather than investigation into news. The real question is who at NBC made that decision? They also gave a platform for Rachel Maddow, so they weren't out to suppress all investigation. Why did they disrespect the legacy of Tim Russert?

I just think to be on a show like Meet The Press that the host and moderator represents the media as well as the American people.

It is one thing to deal with and accept spin and question ducking at public political events, but when a politician comes to you or appears on your platform to speak to your audience that is another thing altogether.

No politician should get the opportunity to simply spin questions or spout meaningless political talking points on a show called Meet The Press.
