WHY I AM A FOOD STAMP APPLICANT
Once upon a time I only needed one source of employment. I completed in-home substance abuse assessments on a contract basis for Fulton County DFCS, through S & T Assessment & Counseling Service, Inc. I also completed substance abuse assessments in other areas, as requested, as well as for the Department of Juvenile Justice, when requested; however the bulk of my work was done for Fulton County DFCS in Atlanta's inner city.
My income level dropped to below poverty level when Governor Sonny Perdue cut the Substance Abuse Treatment services budget by 24 percent in the state of Georgia, causing my referrals to cease. After my income level dropped from healthy lower middle class to below poverty level, I applied for food stamps. That was four months ago, and I am yet to receive them.

This is another category of food stamp recipients.
People of any race that work and don't make enough money to feed themselves.

The GOP calls them lazy and shiftless and lacking in work ethic.

People working for less than $9.00 and hour are finding it nearly impossible to to feed themselves without the help of the federal government.

It's not just another category, it's by far the largest category.

I just applied for food stamps. Yes, it is embarrassing, which is why it infuriates me when people accuse those of us who need the help of being lazy and irresponsible. I'm too lady-like to say what I really want to say to those people...nor do I need to explain -why- I need food stamps right now. I only know that at the age of 44, this is the first time in my life I've ever needed public assistance, and I don't wish this on anyone.

Don't you think it is pitiful how people act especially those that have been fortunate to never have lost a job or missed a pay check to those that are being economically devastated as a result of the misguided economic and military policies of the Republicans during the past decade.

I was going to apply, my husband is self employed and it get tough during certain months, Only needed it for two months, we make $5 too much a month, they will not take off his "overhead" only go by our "gross" income minus the house, So we don't qualify.
I would imagine there are alot out there on the"line", do not feel bad about applying and using them < You've paid taxed You've PAID for the service. Use it when you have to that is what it is for. Ignore those who condemn you for it, they are ignorant.

I have heard more than once of people trying to be honest, and not wanting to commit any type of fraud being denied food stamps for making a few dollars a month more than the cut off point.

What I wonder is how the 50,000,000 people on food stamps are going to vote, are they going to vote for the party that actually put them on food stamps (the Republican Party which actually caused the recession) or will they vote for the party that is trying to help them get through the recession with a little dignity (the Democratic Party).
All of the Republicans are promising if elected to cut the social safety net for the poor even more than it has already been.
As for job creation even though they talk about it but the truth is that the Republicans aren't very good at that.

They think the way to solve problems is to throw all these horrible people off food stamps or any other kind of assistance. The problem just transfers to another budget issue that has to absorb the problem. The Republicans are so short sighted to realize that the more money you invest in social safety net programs, preventive programs, after school programs, that they are helping to solve problems - they'd rather just kick the bodies out of the way and keep walking on.
Sad.
